The name Wokingham means ‘Wocca's peoples home', which supposedly comes from the name of a Saxon chieftain, who also owned land in both Wokefield and Woking. The growth and expansion of Wokingham began when the Bishop of Salisbury ordered roads and plots to be set out and made available for people to rent. The Courts of Windsor forest also used to be held in Wokingham, and gave the town the right to hold a market from 1219.
