Say Cheese! Isleworth kids learn in store 14th March 2008
Almost a hundred Isleworth youngsters have found the perfect base for a lesson in food service, after a top town pizza delivery and takeaway store responded to an appeal for help.
US pizza expert Papa John’s, which has a store on the London Road, will run three consecutive days of classes for four and five year old pupils from nearby Marlborough Primary School as part of projects on food and uniform.
And the children could not be learning from a better place, with staff at Isleworth having recently won a medal in Papa John’s prestigious national Pizza Games competition – the Olympics of food making.
Top trainers will be on had to show the pupils how to slap dough, distribute toppings, bake their pizza and even box the finished product to take away with them.
Papa John’s franchisee Shakir Margan is delighted to be welcoming the classes and believes they will learn while having fun.
He said: “We pride ourselves on training our staff to ensure that we prepare the best possible pizza and that is something we will be communicating to the kids.
“However, pizza making is great fun and far more engaging that if you were sitting a classroom looking at pictures or studying books about food preparation.
“It is also interesting that the classes are focusing on staff uniforms as we believe that the customer sees every team member as an extension of the store so we insist on clean, smart branded outfits for every member.”
Papa John’s has supplied a large quantity of its unique fresh dough and toppings for the school, along with goody bags for every pupil and teacher Elizabeth Rolfe thanked the company for bringing the lesson to life.
She said: “I know they have gone to considerable expense to welcome the three classes and it is a great gesture which will live long in the memory of the children and get them really excited about the lessons.
“It is fantastic that they are being shown the real workings of a pizza business by a company that focuses on the quality of its ingredients and customer service and we couldn’t have found a better place to host the lessons.”
